The Quarantine Blues: Musicians Killing Time In Isolation, Part Nineteen - Ned Hill
In an effort to formalize our Quarantine Blues series a bit, we’ve devised a 5-question quiz to pose to the musicians & other media figures sharing in the Covid-19 stay-at-home orders sweepstakes. There will be new entries every coupla days.
Ned Hill is an accomplished musician/singer/songwriter who lives in Nashville and has some surprising coping mechanisms to get by during this lockdown. Make sure to check out his Facebook and Bandcamp pages, and watch for his new record “By The Light Of The Radio” coming this summer!
1) How are you getting your live music fix? Any live streams or YouTube clips that standout?
Well, I do catch a live stream from time to time when I see my friends doing it. When I need a YouTube fix, I default to Devo and catch some of their past live performances; great stuff!…or Mellencamp’s “Check it Out” video…or Cyndi Lauper’s “Money Changes Everything” original MTV video.
2) What else have you been watching, listening to and reading to pass the time?
I’ve been watching a lot of old movies and old classic TV shows like Dick Van Dyke, Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock. Anything to reduce the amount of cable news I watch. We all know what the story is there. My music listening has kind of gone the same; a lot of older music from the 60’s and 70’s. The book I’m reading right now is “Edgar Cayce-An American Prophet” by Sidney Kirkpatrick.
3) How are you managing (or not) to stay creative/healthy?
I walk a few dogs everyday to make extra money so that gets me out of the house. That really helps my mental state I think. Creatively, I’m working on a new record and continuing to write new material. As you know, writing songs is part of a singer-songwriter’s process regardless of what’s going on around us.
4) You have to pick just 3 records to listen to till this is over. What are they?
Oh gosh…something I’m not burned out on. Let’s go with “The Temptations-Greatest Hits”, “Foghat-Fool For The City”, and “John Cougar Mellencamp-Scarecrow”.
5) Food Time! Have you been cooking in or carrying out? Favorite recipes or restaurants you’re supporting? What’s in the liquor cabinet? Share your quarantine eating and drinking habits and changes!
I’ve been cooking in mostly with the occasional pizza run to Pizza Hut or Five Points Pizza here in Nashville. My home cooking consists of a lot of rice, vegetables, and tuna…I’m a big fan of tuna! Not much in liquor cabinet but there is beer in the fridge. I like to overindulge on the weekends and make random unannounced late night video chat calls to friends of mine, some of which I haven’t talked to in years…you might be next!
