New Call Me Rita Video - "Measure Twice, Cut Once"

Columbus’ powerhouse band Call Me Rita, led by Vanessa Jean Speckman, dropped a new video earlier this month and we wanted to make sure everyone sees it because, well, it’s all kinds of awesome.

Vanessa says: Measure Twice, Cut Once” is based on my experiences as a female body in the ER and also being a touring body that means health access changes state to state and I don’t think many folks were aware of that pre-Roe v Wade being overturned by the fascists. I came to Micah with the chorus and idea and he helped me develop it into the song and we brought it to the guys and it really came together quite quickly and naturally. I think we rehearsed twice as a band then recorded it at Secret Studio with Keith Hanlon. Frank Turner mixed it. I really love how aggressive he is. It matches the energy I’m trying to grasp in these songs.

Micah had the idea for the video and I was really appreciative of the guys being willing to shoot the video - it’s at the practice space and the AC had been stolen off the roof and it was 100 degrees. They showed up with their A-game and a set of fake eyeballs. I think the light-hearted visuals accent the heaviness of the song well. This formula is what our camp is going for - record and get the song out into the world and repeat. When we have enough songs for a proper record, we’ll collect everything and put that out. Being a pandemic band has made things feel extra urgent and exciting.

Call Me Rita is Vanessa Jean Speckman, Micah Schnabel, Jay Gasper, Todd May, Jason Winner.

Call Me Rita is a Pencil Storm favorite. Watch this space and their Bandcamp page for updates!
