In Memoriam: David Crosby

On Thursday, David Crosby of The Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young passed away at the age of 81.

Croz’ was a beloved figure in the L.A. Laurel Canyon scene of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. The music he was an integral part of helped to shape the way the world remembers key events from those eras, from the feel-good flower-power of the hippie generation to the senseless killings at Kent State. In the ‘80s headlines around him turned to drug & gun arrests, leading to a stint in the Texas prison system.

Recent years found him on stages with Jason Isbell and as a prominent voice in the Laurel Canyon documentary. He was active and controversial on Twitter, frequently interacting with fans and music colleagues, speaking his mind bluntly, curtly, and honestly – often to the determent of the tweet’s recipient. His friends loved him passionately, but he’d also burned a lot of bridges over the years, most notably with Graham Nash, who left a touching tribute to his nemesis that sums up David’s passing well.

RIP David Crosby, August 14, 1941 – January 18, 2023
